Upland Trail

The Upland Trail at Whitfield is located to the east of the parking lot. It starts near the entrance gate and extends along the fence line. It goes behind the Visitor Center and ends at the Chihuahuan Desert Garden on the south side of the Visitor Center.

This trail was established in 2010 under the direction of the then manager of Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area, Ted Hodoba. This area is a run-off detention basin to keep nearby structures from flooding.* Mr. Hodoba choose to plant native flora to develop a green basin that also serves as a valuable educational resource representing three local ecosystems: the foothills of the Manzano Mountains, the Juniper Savannah, and the Chihuahuan Desert.

*Note: Since this is a detention basin, the trail will be closed to foot traffic during times of high rainfall. For your safety, please do not try to walk this trail if it is closed. Thank you!
